While older homes have plenty of charm, the fact is they are nevertheless quite old. As a result, the plumbing and other parts of the home that were modern back in the day are likely quite outdated by today's standards. New Pipes
In many older homes, it is quite possible the pipes could be made of lead, which as you know is quite dangerous when it's in your water supply. Therefore, plan on having your plumbing system examined by a plumber and updated as necessary. Even if the pipes don't contain lead, chances are many of them are suffering from rust or corrosion, meaning they need to be replaced.
New Roof
In any older home, it is almost a certainty you will be replacing the roof so that it can be brought up to modern standards. If your older home has an asphalt shingle roof that's due for replacement, consider adding a state-of-the-art metal roof as a replacement. Very energy-efficient, a new metal roof could last at least 50 years or perhaps longer.
New Water Heater
While you have a plumber examining your older home's pipes, don't let them leave before they also look at your home's water heater. More than likely, water heater repair or replacement will be needed. If you have noticed the water in your home is not as hot as it should be, you don't have hot water when you need it, or your water heater is making plenty of strange noises or is leaking, getting a new one will be a smart decision on your part.
New Electrical Box and Wiring
When your older home was first built, computers may have not even existed. Needless to say, the electrical system currently in place won't work very well with the various computers, televisions, and other high-tech gadgets now being used. To solve this problem, have an electrician replace older wiring and install additional wiring as needed. Also, have a modern electrical box installed as well, since many found in older homes still rely on fuses.
