If you’d like better control of your home’s indoor climate and comfort level while saving money, make sure your HVAC system is up to snuff. It doesn’t require major maintenance or modifications; just perform standard upkeep and be aware of how the system works. Here are four tips to improve HVAC system performance. Keep them in mind before the hot and cold weather grow intolerable!
Keep It Clean
More than likely, the outdoor portion of your HVAC system has an outdoor part like a condenser unit, which gets rid of hot air or performs a similar function. You should check on the unit every few months. If the area surrounding the unit is overgrown with weeds, cut them down. The unit needs to have good airflow, and weeds will block air intake and output. If the unit is dirty and the screens are blocked with dirt, leaves, webs, and other things, hose it down to clear away debris.
Leaks and Drafts
As secure as your home may seem, conditioned air can leak out and unpleasant air can blow in. Inspect your walls, doors, and windows for holes and cracks that need to be sealed. Weather stripping around the doors and windows can stop the “good” air from getting out and the “bad” air from getting in. Look for holes and cracks in the walls outside, too, and fill them with caulk or similar sealant materials.
Make Room!
Another tip to improve HVAC system performance is to ensure the air in your home has an unimpeded pathway. Look around. Are the vents blocked by furniture or accumulated dust and lint? Remove and wash vent covers, and vacuum out any ductwork you can access. Remove and clean or replace any filters in the HVAC system, and make a note on your calendar for the next round of maintenance in the coming months.
Schedule Maintenance
At least once a year, hire an HVAC maintenance professional to visit your home to evaluate and clean your system. They will look under the hood, so to speak, to find and prevent issues you can’t see. For example, they can ensure the HVAC unit is level, preventing damage. They can also perform a thorough cleaning of the ductwork in your home, eliminating dust and allergens that accumulate there. Regular check-ups ensure clean indoor air, no HVAC system breakdowns, and a more efficient air conditioning system overall.
