Choosing The Right Moving Date

Moving into a new residence takes proper planning. Before you begin informing family and friends about the relocation, decluttering and packing, it’s essential to pick a moving date. Choosing the right date can make all the difference between a smooth transition and a stressful one. Ultimately, the ideal date is one that suits your schedule and personal circumstances, as well as one that doesn’t add unnecessary stress to the process. Here are several factors to consider when choosing the perfect moving date.

Work Commitments

Before choosing a random moving date, consider any prior work commitments. For example, if you accepted a new job offer and your first day of work has been determined, you should organize the move well before that specific date. That way, you’ll be settled into the new home and can focus on the job. Alternatively, if you are staying at your current job, consider any deadlines, projects or other obligations that may affect the moving process.

School & Extracurriculars

Take into account your children’s school schedule. A move can be disruptive and stressful for kids, which is why it may be good idea to relocate at the end of the school year or during summer break. This means they won’t have to adjust to the new school during the middle of the term. If either is not an option, speak to your children’s current and new teachers on how you can make the transition easier for them.

Additionally, consider your youngsters’ extracurricular activities at school such as clubs and sports. Try not to let the move conflict with any important games or other events. If you have teenagers in middle or high school, you may also want to avoid moving during important exams.

Personal Schedule

Before confirming a moving date, ensure that it doesn’t conflict with any family events. Check your calendar for important dates such as vacations, weddings, parties and holidays, and plan around them to avoid stress.

Type of Move

The distance and location of the move can impact your moving date. For instance, local moves typically take a few hours and can be completed in a day. This offers you more flexibility and control when selecting a moving date. Moreover, may might not have to take a lot of time off work.

On the other hand, moving long distance or internationally can take days or even weeks. What’s more, you should also account for travel time, dealing with customs and resting. You may need to plan the moving day around a road trip or flight availability.

Seasons & Weather Conditions

The seasons can play a major role in selecting the right moving date. Summer is typically the most popular time to relocate, especially during the weekends. Many moving companies, however, tend to be in high demand during the warmer months. For this reason, it’s crucial to book your move well in advance.

Spring is another ideal time to move as it offers good weather conditions. Moreover, the demand for moving services is not as high as during the summer. If you’re considering cost, winter is usually the least expensive time to move because demand is low. This also means there’s more availability for booking a date. The disadvantage of relocating in the winter, however, is dealing with cold weather, snow and ice. Ultimately, moving on a weekday during off-season months is the best economical option.

The ideal moving date is one that accounts for your family’s needs, budget and prior commitments. Additionally, it’s recommended to book a move at least two months in advance to ensure you have the proper time to prepare and pack.
