Sounds That Indicate You Should Have Your Plumbing Checked Out

Your plumbing system should work like a well-oiled machine, and any strange sounds that you hear coming from it could mean that there’s a problem that needs attention. Whether the problem is caused by an old plumbing system or a part that’s worn or damaged, you should have any strange sounds investigated by a knowledgeable plumber so that an appropriate solution can be implemented.

Dripping

A dripping sound usually means that there’s a leak somewhere in your plumbing system. The leak is likely coming from a pipe, but one of your plumbing fixtures could be losing water because of cracks, holes, or an improper fitting. You’ll want to get any leaks resolved as quickly as possible to save your home from water damage.

Knocking

Your water heater might be emitting knocking sounds from it, or you might be hearing banging sounds coming from your pipes. The knocking sounds could mean that your water heater needs to be repaired or replaced. The sounds could also be caused by an easily resolvable issue known as “water hammer,” which usually happens when a water valve is shut off and water rushes into the closed valve.

Screeching

If you hear screeching sounds coming from a faucet or valve, the part may just need to be replaced. Often you’ll hear a screeching sound when using hot water as the metal expands due to the heat, otherwise, it’s a sign that water is being forced through an opening smaller than what was designed. Screeching sounds may also be coming from air that has gotten into the pipes. All trained plumbers can replace ill-fitting faucets and valves to put an end to the screeching sounds.

Gurgling

Gurgling sounds that you hear in a drain may indicate that the drain is clogged. Blockages or air in a pipe could also cause you to hear gurgling sounds. The sounds may even be signs of a heating pump or sewer line problem.

Water Flowing Through Pipes

When a faucet is turned on or you’re running your washing machine or dishwasher, it’s natural to hear some water running through your pipes. However, if you still hear water even when all your plumbing fixtures are turned off, there could be a leak somewhere in a pipe or another part of your plumbing system.

If your plumbing system is up to date and functioning properly, it shouldn’t be making a lot of strange noises. Plumbing professionals who know how to address all types of plumbing issues can put an end to those unusual sounds you hear by resolving the underlying cause and getting your plumbing system back to working the way that it should.
