When you step into the shower each morning, you are of course expecting to take a nice, relaxing hot shower. However, if you are suddenly getting soaked with cold water, this probably means you've got issues with your home's water heater. Since a water heater is so crucial to various household tasks, it's important to keep it performing at its best. To do so, here are four simple things you can do to ensure you're not surprised by another cold shower.
Test the Pressure Release Valve
One of the most important things you can do to maintain your water heater is to regularly test its pressure release valve. Located near the top of the tank, you should shut off the power to the tank and place a bucket underneath the pipe extending from the valve. Next, lift the valve's tab to see if water will flow out. Since this valve can relieve pressure within the tank when levels get too high, this is important for both maintenance and safety.
Drain the Tank
Over time, your water heater may begin to build up sediment within the tank. By draining the tank at least once per year, you can make sure the sediment does not wind up in your home's water. Along with having rust in your water, the sediment can build up and begin to affect heating elements and other internal components, decreasing the lifespan of your water heater.
Adjust the Temperature
When plumbers are performing maintenance on your water heater, one thing you may want them to do is to adjust the water heater's temperature. To have your heater working as efficiently as possible, the temperature should be lowered to 120 degrees. As a rule, for every 10 degrees the temperature is lowered your energy costs can decrease by up to five percent.
Insulate the Heater
Finally, a water heater that is insulated from top to bottom will be much more efficient and last longer, since it won't have to work nearly as hard as one that is not insulated. While doing this, you may also want to insulate the pipes connecting to the water heater. When the weather turns cold, this will keep the pipes warm and prevent freezing.
