HVAC

As the days continue to heat up, heating and cooling systems will be cranking up to blast in cool air after many days of winter. They will be a relief to the sweltering temperatures of summer. If you are looking to buy a new or replace an old HVAC system, this might be the perfect time before the summer heat kicks in.

Buying a new HVAC system, however, is not an easy undertaking. There are lots of options to choose from in the market today. This can lead to a dilemma on the best HVAC system to choose, especially if you are doing it for the first time.

Before you choose the right HVAC system for your home or office, you should weigh the advantages and disadvantages each system has to offer. To help you with these, we have put together the pros and cons you need to know of the different HVAC systems available.

So, here goes.

The Split system

This type of HVAC system has been a heating and cooling favourite for many homes and businesses for years. They are the most common among all HVAC types. Typically they are split into outdoor and indoor components. The outdoor equipment parts contain a compressor and a condenser, while the indoor parts contain an air handler. There’s also a line set between the two units which houses a refrigerant tubing, a drain for condensation and a power cable.

Advantages of a Split system

  •  Easy to blend with your décor. Due to their flexibility, split HVAC systems can be suspended on the ceiling or hang on a wall. This makes it much more elegant and aesthetically pleasing than the more obstructive window units - which are often an eyesore.

  •  Less noise- Noise from a HVAC system can be annoying. But with the split system, you don’t have to worry about the noise since it does its operations way silently than other systems.

  • These systems come with purifiers and humidifiers- this makes your home comfortable regardless of the weather.

Disadvantages of Split systems

  • Can be incredibly expensive – The split system might not be the cheapest option if you are looking to save on installation costs. However, they can cover up for the cost after years of energy savings.

  • Split systems tend to take up a larger space- This makes them well suited for larger homes but trickier for smaller dwellings.

  • Outdoor noise may be a nuisance- Even though indoor units don’t make any noise, split systems can generate a lot of noise outdoors which may be a problem if you live in a highly populated area.

Packed HVAC systems

As the name suggests, a packaged heating and cooling system is just that - one large unit with all the components placed in a particular spot.

The ‘package’ is a combination of an evaporator, furnace, and a compressor. Being in one place makes them great space savers for homes with small outdoor areas.

Advantages of a packaged HVAC system

  • Packed systems can be used in setups where a traditional spit system is not an option. They use up less space making them be a better choice for smaller homes.

  • They are less noisy. Since most of the mechanical components are located outside, you end up with a quieter home.

  • Less costly- Packed HVAC systems tend to be cheaper during installation and when doing repairs. They are therefore a good opportunity for people looking to install HVAC systems on a budget.

Disadvantages of a packaged

  • Tend to wear out faster- The entire system is located outdoors, thus being at the mercy of the elements. They, therefore, tend to wear out faster than the split or ductless systems.

  • Less efficient- Ductless systems are less efficient in distribution than most of the other HVAC systems.

Ductless Split systems

Ductless split systems, also known as mini-split systems, consist of an outside air conditioner which does the cooling or a heat pump for heating and cooling. Indoor components consist of a fan which can be installed on the ceiling, floor or on the wall. These systems, however, do not include a furnace.

Advantages of ductless split HVAC systems

  • They have an easy installation process – Not only is ductwork not necessary but also there is a very small connector for your indoor and outdoor units. This makes it much easier to install than other HVAC units.

  •  Ductless split systems have greater energy efficiency – Ductwork and leaky ducts are the major culprits of energy loss in most HVAC systems. It is estimated that over 30% of cooling energy gets lost in the ducts. Since there is no ductwork in split systems, you lose less energy and save more on your electricity bills.

  • Great for commercial use- Ductless systems are a great option for hotels, venues, apartments or smaller rooms since they can be adjusted to fit individual temperature needs.

Disadvantages of ductless split HVAC systems

  • Can be quite expensive- Ductless systems are expensive to install and repair making them not an ideal choice when on a budget.

  • They require extensive cleaning and maintaining. Regular cleaning and maintenance is important but it adds up to the cost of having the system.

  • Using less power might be both a pro and a con. Ductless systems may not offer the same consistency as other systems do.
