Renovating your home is an exciting and rewarding experience. There’s no better feeling than selecting material and colours for your dream home and then seeing them come to life. But if you’re living in the space your renovating, it doesn’t take a genius to work out its often an exhausting and lengthy process.

You may have gone through an office renovation or retail fit-out and thought that experience was stressful, however when you’re renovating your own home; you have limited ways of escaping the chaos.

The H2H team, who specializes in professional organizing in collaboration with ImpeccaBuild, Sydney's leading shopfitting company, have collated these 4 simple tips on how to help you keep your sanity throughout your home renovation.

1. Be Sure To Have A Designated Break Room

If you are only renovating part of your house, allocate a room when you can spend time away from the mess and chaos. Choose a space that is easy to access and is suitable to perform everyday tasks.

During home renovations, you often have strangers walking through your house frequently, clanging and bashing about, and invading your personal space. This can become tiresome quickly, so think of your break the room as a place you can unwind in private, and escape the chaos, at least for a little while.

2. Pop-up kitchen

If your renovating your kitchen or don’t have access to it while other rooms are getting worked on, then you will need a place to store and prepare your food. Regularly eating out can be a costly solution, and regardless you will still need space to make school lunches or to have your morning coffee.

We recommend designating a room within your home to set up a temporary kitchen space. Whether that be your garage, basement or a spare room, deck out your pop-up kitchen with portable tables, fold-out chairs and a mini-fridge if you have it. By doing so, you now have a temporary space to eat meals as a family, prepare food and lunches and another room to escape too with you need a break from renovation chaos.

3. Keep The Kids Entertained

Under-going a home renovation causes a temporary disruption to your everyday routine. For adults, its easy to adjust and accept the current circumstance because you know an end is in sight. However, for children, it can be a challenging time, especially for the little ones who are unable to understand exactly what’s going on.

Therefore, to help your kids through the process, try and keep things as normal as possible. For example, ensure you set aside time each day to give them your full attention. Take them to the park after school or play with them outside in the back yard, activities such as these will be a helpful distraction from what's going on at home.

Similarly, set aside a construction free room where they can play games and be kids. You may also find spending time visiting friends and family will be of great benefit to them during this time. The key is to keep them away from the house as much as possible, but when they are home, make sure there is space for them to feel at ease.

 4. Store Away Precious Items

Home renovations cause lots of dust and mess and cleaning up the aftermath can be quite the task. After you have covered areas with plastic drop sheets, it's a good idea to store away smaller furniture and other items you want to protect. This will help prevent more work for yourself during the cleanup, as these items will be dust-free!

If storage is tight, consider hiring a self-storage container until the renovation is complete. This can sometimes be an expensive option, so be sure to ask friends family or neighbors if they would be willing to lean you some space.
